Sony Launches New Handheld Gaming Device

Sony Corp. (SNE) launched a new handheld video game device Tuesday that will eschew traditional disks and game cartridges, allowing games to be downloaded exclusively through a wireless connection.

At a press conference during the Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3, in Los Angeles, Sony (SNE) lifted the wraps on the PSP Go, which is set to launch this October.

"Allow me to introduce the worst kept secret of E3," joked Kaz Hirai, president and chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, making light of the fact that pictures of the device had been leaked across the gadget blogs before the event.

Hirai said Sony will continue to sell its current handheld, the PSP 3000. The new device "is for people who are already living the digital lifestyle," he said.

The PSP Go is 50% smaller than the existing PSP, and 40% lighter. It has 16GB worth of memory to download and store games, movies and TV shows that users can purchase through the company's PlayStation Network.

The device marks another step for the video game industry into the model of digital distribution. Most video games are traditionally sold on laser discs through retailers, but console manufacturers have been developing alternative models based on gamers downloading content directly from the Web. ...[Read]

Amazon Jumps Into Video Games Trade-ins

World's largest online retailer offering gift cards in return for old video games.

E-commerce giant Amazon has unveiled a video game trade-in program, offering customers gift cards to the most popular store on the Web in return for old video games.

It's a move that could position Amazon to better capitalize on one of the healthier media segments: games. Reselling used games also could be potentially lucrative for the world's largest online retailer, considering that prices on pre-played titles can still remain fairly high while still representing a discount from the $50 and $60 cost of new products.

Amazon is accepting old games from the major console systems, including Microsoft Xbox, Nintendo Wii and Sony PlayStation. The online retail giant is not accepting PC games, however, a move that has garnered criticism in the site's discussion forum.

Harrison has faith in the PSP

Ex-Sony Worldwide Studios boss, now Atari president (and always an exceptionally tall man), Phil Harrison this week throws in his tuppence on the state of the PSP, stating that the handheld is still doing well, and that the future of the device remains bright.

Speaking with UK games site Eurogamer.net this week, Harrison tells the world that Sony are doing all the right things and that Atari will continue to support the format.

"There is no doubt that PSP is a very vibrant platform from a hardware perspective and I think Sony has recently made some good moves into opening up online distribution for software on PSP, so Im looking to explore that," offered Harrison.
